How to read the Visa Bulletin

  1. Find your row: the preference category of your petition (for example EB-2 or F2A).
  2. Find your column: the country you are chargeable to, usually country of birth. China (mainland born), India, Mexico and the Philippines have their own columns; everyone else uses “All other countries”.
  3. Compare your priority date with the date in the cell. If your date is earlier than the cut-off, a visa number can be allocated; if the cell says C, every date qualifies; U means no numbers are available.
  4. Pick the right chart: Final Action Dates decide when a case can be approved; Dates for Filing decide when you may start filing, when USCIS allows that chart for the month.
